What brings people to burnout therapy

Therapy is a space to slow down and look at what's underneath. These are some of the patterns people bring into the room.

FOR WHEN SOMETHING FEELS OFF

Empty, no matter how much you rest

The tiredness has gone past physical. Weekends and time off can stop refilling the tank the way they used to, and the depletion can follow into everything.

Detached from work that used to matter

A creeping cynicism and distance — going through the motions, caring less, and feeling guilty about caring less.

Unable to switch off

Even with the chance to stop, the mind can keep running. Rest can feel unearned or impossible, and the line between on and off disappears.

How we approach burnout therapy

OUR APPROACH

Burnout overlaps with depression and anxiety, and it often can't be untangled from perfectionism, overwork, and the pressure to keep performing. Therapy at Auren Wellness starts by understanding your particular version — where the depletion is coming from, what's keeping you in it, and what's making it hard to stop. We draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to work with the thoughts that drive over-functioning and guilt around rest, and on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help reconnect you with what actually matters underneath the exhaustion. We look at boundaries, recovery, and the practical patterns that led here, alongside the emotional toll. Because burnout so often travels with low mood and anxiety, we treat the whole picture — see our pages on depression therapy and anxiety therapy if either resonates.

Insurance, Billing, and What to Expect

Insurance coverage

Registered Psychotherapist and Registered Social Worker services are covered by most extended health plans in Canada. We recommend confirming your specific coverage before your first paid session. Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Green Shield, and most major insurers include coverage.

Direct billing

We direct-bill where your insurer allows it. Otherwise, you pay at the time of session and submit the receipt for reimbursement.

Receipts

Every session generates a receipt listing the provider's license number, suitable for insurance reimbursement.

In-person or virtual

In-person sessions are held at our Ottawa office. Virtual sessions use a secure, PIPEDA-compliant video platform. You can switch between the two.

Cancellation

We ask for 24 hours notice on cancellations. Late cancellations and no-shows are charged the full session fee.

Your first session

After the free 15-minute consultation, your first paid session is intake-focused. Bring questions, anything you have already tried, and any goals you have in mind.

QUESTIONS

Common Questions About Burnout Therapy

1

Is burnout the same as depression?

+

They overlap but aren't identical. Burnout is specifically tied to chronic stress, often from work or caregiving, and features exhaustion, detachment, and reduced effectiveness. It can lead into or coexist with depression. We assess the full picture and treat what's actually there.

2

Won't burnout go away if I just take time off?

+

Rest helps, but burnout that's built up over months or years usually returns if the underlying patterns don't change — the workload, the boundaries, the drive to over-function. Therapy works on those roots so recovery is more likely to last beyond the next break.

3

I'm burned out from caregiving, not a job. Can you help?

+

Yes. Burnout from parenting, caring for a family member, or other unpaid demands is just as real. The exhaustion and depletion follow the same pattern, and the work is similar.

4

Do I need to quit my job to recover?

+

Not necessarily. Some people make changes at work; others find that boundaries, recovery, and shifting their relationship to the pressure make the difference without a major upheaval. Therapy helps you figure out what's actually needed for you.

5

How is burnout therapy different from stress management?

+

Stress-management tips treat the surface. Therapy looks at why the depletion built up, the patterns and beliefs keeping you in it, and how burnout connects to mood and anxiety — so you're building something sustainable, not just coping better temporarily.

6

What are common signs of burnout?

+

People often describe exhaustion that rest doesn't fix, growing cynicism or detachment from work they used to care about, trouble concentrating, and feeling like nothing they do makes a difference. It can show up in the body too, in sleep, tension, and headaches. If several of these feel familiar, it's worth taking seriously.

7

How much does burnout therapy cost, and is it covered by insurance?

+

Sessions are 50 minutes and typically range from $150 to $225 depending on the therapist, confirmed during your free consultation. OHIP generally doesn't cover psychotherapy with Registered Psychotherapists or Social Workers, but most extended health plans do, including many workplace benefit plans. Auren offers direct billing to many insurers and provides receipts for reimbursement, and sliding-scale spots are available case-by-case based on need.

8

Can I do burnout therapy online?

+

Yes. Secure video sessions work well for burnout, especially when your capacity is already stretched: no commute, no waiting room, just the session itself. You can also meet in person at our Ottawa office, or alternate between the two depending on the week.

9

What approaches do you use in burnout therapy?

+

Therapists at Auren Wellness draw on evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), alongside practical work on boundaries, recovery, and workload patterns. The focus is on both easing the exhaustion you're carrying now and changing the patterns that led to it.

10

What if I'm too exhausted to commit to weekly sessions?

+

Tell us, and we'll work with it. Session frequency is set with your therapist, not by a fixed program, and online sessions lower the effort of attending. Arriving depleted is normal with burnout; you don't need to bring energy or preparation, just yourself.
