Registered therapists

Every clinician is registered with a regulatory college — the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW), or the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).

Sliding scale options

We want therapy to be financially accessible for everyone. Reduced rates are available case-by-case based on need and availability.

Direct billing

We submit directly to most major insurers, so you don't pay out of pocket upfront.

Ottawa-based and Canadian-owned

Our office is in Ottawa. All client records are stored in Canada and handled under PIPEDA and PHIPA.

What brings people to therapy around retirement

Therapy is a space to slow down and look at what's underneath. These are some of the patterns people bring into the room.

FOR WHEN SOMETHING FEELS OFF

Days without a shape

Weekdays and weekends can start to blur together. Some people fill every hour to avoid the gap, and others find whole afternoons go by without much happening at all.

Who am I without the job

For decades, the question of what you do had an easy answer. Many people are surprised by how much of their sense of self turns out to have lived at work.

Home feels crowded

When a couple both retire, or one retires first, the house can suddenly feel small. Old routines collide, and small irritations may come up more often than either of you expected.

How we approach the move into retirement

OUR APPROACH

Retirement transition therapy at Auren Wellness gives you room to think through what leaving work actually changes. For many people the structure goes first: a reason to get up at a set time, the colleagues, the sense of being useful in a way others can see. Sessions look at what you are losing and what you want to keep.

Some people come in before their last day, to plan how they want the first year to go. Others come a year or two later, when the travel is done and the quiet has set in. Sessions also make room for the people around you: a partner who has had the house to themselves, adult children with opinions, friends who retired differently. Retirement changes those relationships too.

If retirement came sooner than you planned, or wasn't your choice, mention it at your free consult so we can match you well. Our career change page covers leaving one kind of work for another, and the wider picture is on our life transitions therapy page.

Insurance, Billing, and What to Expect

Insurance coverage

Registered Psychotherapist and Registered Social Worker services are covered by most extended health plans in Canada. We recommend confirming your specific coverage before your first paid session. Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Green Shield, and most major insurers include coverage.

Direct billing

We direct-bill where your insurer allows it. Otherwise, you pay at the time of session and submit the receipt for reimbursement.

Receipts

Every session generates a receipt listing the provider's license number, suitable for insurance reimbursement.

In-person or virtual

In-person sessions are held at our Ottawa office. Virtual sessions use a secure, PIPEDA-compliant video platform. You can switch between the two.

Cancellation

We ask for 24 hours notice on cancellations. Late cancellations and no-shows are charged the full session fee.

Your first session

After the free 15-minute consultation, your first paid session is intake-focused. Bring questions, anything you have already tried, and any goals you have in mind.

QUESTIONS

Common Questions About Retirement Transition Therapy

1

Should I start therapy before I retire or after?

+

Either works. Coming in before your last day gives you time to plan the first year; coming in after lets you work with what has actually changed. Many people only realize they want to talk once the first few months are over.

2

Can my partner come to some sessions?

+

Yes, if you both want that and your therapist agrees it would be useful. Retirement often changes a couple's routine, and a joint session is one way to talk about it together.

3

Is it common to feel low after retiring?

+

Many people describe a dip in the months after they stop working, even when they were looking forward to it. If it lasts or deepens, it is worth talking to someone, whether that's a therapist or your doctor.

4

Do your therapists see people over 65?

+

Yes. Both therapists on this page list adults and people over 65 among the clients they see.

5

Is therapy covered by OHIP in Ontario?

+

Psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist or Registered Social Worker is not covered by OHIP. Many extended health and workplace benefit plans cover it, though plans differ on which credentials they reimburse. Check whether yours covers RP, RSW, or both.

6

Can I do retirement transition therapy online?

+

Yes. Our therapists offer secure video sessions to clients anywhere in Ontario, and many people mix virtual and in-person visits depending on the week. Everything discussed stays confidential either way.
