What brings people to life transitions therapy

Therapy is a space to slow down and look at what's underneath. These are some of the patterns people bring into the room.

FOR WHEN SOMETHING FEELS OFF

A good change that feels flat

You got what you wanted: the job, the move, the retirement date. Some people find the relief wears off quickly and something flatter takes its place, which can be confusing to admit.

Not sure who you are now

A role that organized your week may have ended or changed shape. Without it, simple questions about how to spend a Tuesday can feel oddly hard to answer.

Everyone expects you to adjust

Friends and family often treat the change as settled news. If you're still unsettled months later, it can seem like you're the only one who hasn't caught up.

How we approach life transitions

OUR APPROACH

Life transitions therapy at Auren Wellness is for the stretch after something big has changed and the old routines no longer fit. The change might be one you chose, like a new job or a move, or one that happened to you. Either way, sessions give you somewhere to sort out what has shifted, what you miss, and what you want the next part of your life to look like.

The work is practical and reflective at once. Some sessions deal with the day to day: sleep, structure, how to fill or protect your time. Others go further back, to the parts of your identity that were tied to a role, a place or a routine, and what it means to let those change. Your therapist follows what is most pressing for you, at a pace you set.

We see adults in person in Ottawa and by secure video anywhere in Ontario. The pages below look at four common transitions in more detail. If the change has left you worn down for months, our burnout and exhaustion page may also fit, and teenagers going through a big change have their own page on life transitions in teens.

Insurance, Billing, and What to Expect

Insurance coverage

Registered Psychotherapist and Registered Social Worker services are covered by most extended health plans in Canada. We recommend confirming your specific coverage before your first paid session. Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Green Shield, and most major insurers include coverage.

Direct billing

We direct-bill where your insurer allows it. Otherwise, you pay at the time of session and submit the receipt for reimbursement.

Receipts

Every session generates a receipt listing the provider's license number, suitable for insurance reimbursement.

In-person or virtual

In-person sessions are held at our Ottawa office. Virtual sessions use a secure, PIPEDA-compliant video platform. You can switch between the two.

Cancellation

We ask for 24 hours notice on cancellations. Late cancellations and no-shows are charged the full session fee.

Your first session

After the free 15-minute consultation, your first paid session is intake-focused. Bring questions, anything you have already tried, and any goals you have in mind.

QUESTIONS

Common Questions About Life Transitions Therapy

1

What counts as a life transition?

+

Any change that reorganizes your daily life or your sense of who you are. Common ones include retirement, a move, children leaving home, a new career and a separation. You don't need the change to be recent, or to be sure it counts, to book a consult.

2

Do I need to be struggling badly to come in?

+

No. Many people come because something feels off and they want to understand it before it gets heavier. Others come to think through a change that hasn't happened yet.

3

How long does therapy for a life transition take?

+

It varies. Some people come for a handful of sessions around one decision; others stay longer while things settle. You and your therapist review how it's going as you go, and you can stop whenever you choose.

4

Is therapy covered by OHIP in Ontario?

+

Psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist or Registered Social Worker is not covered by OHIP. Many extended health and workplace benefit plans cover it, though plans differ on which credentials they reimburse. Check whether yours covers RP, RSW, or both.

5

Do I need a referral to see a therapist in Ontario?

+

No. You can book directly with a Registered Psychotherapist or Registered Social Worker without a doctor's referral. Some insurance plans ask for one before reimbursing, so it is worth checking your policy.

6

Can I do life transitions therapy online?

+

Yes. Our therapists offer secure video sessions to clients anywhere in Ontario, and many people mix virtual and in-person visits depending on the week. Everything discussed stays confidential either way.
