What brings people to postpartum depression therapy

Therapy is a space to slow down and look at what's underneath. These are some of the patterns people bring into the room.

FOR WHEN SOMETHING FEELS OFF

It doesn't feel the way you expected

Everyone said this would be the happiest time, and instead there's sadness, numbness, or dread — and a deep guilt for feeling that way.

Exhausted beyond the sleepless nights

A depletion that rest doesn't touch, alongside tearfulness, irritability, or anxiety that can spike without warning.

Frightening thoughts you can't say out loud

Intrusive, distressing thoughts are a common and treatable part of postpartum depression and anxiety — and naming them with someone safe is often the first relief.

How we approach postpartum depression therapy

OUR APPROACH

Postpartum depression is different from the short-lived 'baby blues' of the first couple of weeks; it's more intense, lasts longer, and interferes with daily life. Therapy at Auren Wellness meets you in the reality of new parenthood — the sleep deprivation, the identity shift, the isolation — without judgment. We draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which is well supported for perinatal depression, to work with the low mood, the anxious or intrusive thoughts, and the enormous adjustment of this period. We can work around a feeding schedule and meet virtually so you don't have to leave home. Where medication is a consideration — including while breastfeeding — that's a conversation for you and your physician, and we're glad to coordinate. If your symptoms ever include thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, please treat that as urgent and use the crisis resources below right away.

Insurance, Billing, and What to Expect

Insurance coverage

Registered Psychotherapist and Registered Social Worker services are covered by most extended health plans in Canada. We recommend confirming your specific coverage before your first paid session. Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Green Shield, and most major insurers include coverage.

Direct billing

We direct-bill where your insurer allows it. Otherwise, you pay at the time of session and submit the receipt for reimbursement.

Receipts

Every session generates a receipt listing the provider's license number, suitable for insurance reimbursement.

In-person or virtual

In-person sessions are held at our Ottawa office. Virtual sessions use a secure, PIPEDA-compliant video platform. You can switch between the two.

Cancellation

We ask for 24 hours notice on cancellations. Late cancellations and no-shows are charged the full session fee.

Your first session

After the free 15-minute consultation, your first paid session is intake-focused. Bring questions, anything you have already tried, and any goals you have in mind.

QUESTIONS

Common Questions About Postpartum Depression Therapy

1

What's the difference between the baby blues and postpartum depression?

+

The baby blues are common, mild, and pass within about two weeks of birth. Postpartum depression is more intense, lasts longer, and interferes with daily life and bonding. If low mood, anxiety, or hopelessness persist beyond two weeks or feel severe, it's worth reaching out.

2

How long after birth can postpartum depression start?

+

It can begin any time in the first year, not just right after delivery. Some people notice it in the early weeks; for others it emerges months later, sometimes around weaning or a return to work. It's treatable whenever it appears.

3

Can I have therapy with my baby, or around feeding?

+

Yes. Virtual sessions mean you can meet from home with your baby nearby, and we'll work around feeding and nap schedules. The aim is to make getting support as manageable as possible in this period.

4

Will I have to go on medication?

+

Not necessarily. Many people recover with therapy alone. If medication is worth considering — including options compatible with breastfeeding — that's a decision for you and your physician, and we're happy to coordinate. Therapy and medication can also work well together.

5

I'm having scary thoughts about my baby. Is that postpartum depression?

+

Intrusive, distressing thoughts are common in postpartum depression and anxiety and don't mean you'll act on them or that you're a bad parent — but they deserve support. Please tell someone. If you ever feel at risk of harming yourself or your baby, treat it as an emergency and use the crisis resources on this page immediately.

6

Can partners and dads experience postpartum depression?

+

Yes. Postpartum depression isn't limited to the parent who gave birth. Partners and fathers can also experience low mood, irritability, and withdrawal after a baby arrives, and adoptive parents can be affected too. Support is available for any new parent, and for couples navigating it together.

7

How much does postpartum depression therapy cost, and is it covered by insurance?

+

Sessions are 50 minutes and typically range from $150 to $225 depending on the therapist, confirmed during your free consultation. OHIP generally doesn't cover psychotherapy with Registered Psychotherapists or Social Workers, but most extended health plans do. Auren offers direct billing to many insurers and provides receipts for reimbursement, and sliding-scale spots are available case-by-case based on need.

8

Can I do postpartum therapy online while caring for a newborn?

+

Yes, and many new parents prefer it. Secure video sessions mean no travel, no childcare logistics, and the flexibility to meet during naps or feeds. Your baby is welcome on screen. If you'd rather get out of the house, in-person sessions at our Ottawa office are available as well.

9

I'm still pregnant and already feeling low. Should I wait until after the birth?

+

No need to wait. Low mood and anxiety during pregnancy are common and treatable, and getting support early can make the postpartum period easier. The same therapist can work with you through pregnancy and beyond, so the support is already in place when the baby comes.

10

How long does postpartum depression therapy take?

+

It varies. Some parents find a couple of months of regular sessions gives them what they need; others want longer support through the first year and the transitions it brings. There's no set program length. You and your therapist review what you need as you go, and you can pause or finish whenever it feels right.
