What brings blended families to therapy

Therapy is a space to slow down and look at what's underneath. These are some of the patterns families bring into the room.

FOR WHEN SOMETHING FEELS OFF

Discipline is the flashpoint

One parent thinks the other is too strict; the other feels undermined. The disagreement is often not about the rule itself — it's about who has standing to set it, and that was never made explicit.

A child is holding back

Warmth toward a stepparent can feel disloyal to the parent who isn't in the house. Children often manage that by keeping a careful distance, which the adults read as rejection.

The couple keeps getting squeezed out

Conversations become logistics: schedules, exes, who takes whom where. The relationship the household depends on gets whatever attention is left over.

How we approach blended family therapy

OUR APPROACH

Blended family therapy at Auren Wellness works with the household as a system rather than looking for someone to correct. We look at roles that were never openly agreed on, at the pace things have moved, and at where expectations are colliding.

A common piece of the work is clarifying who holds authority for what. Stepparents often move into a disciplinary role sooner than a child can accept it, and easing that back while the relationship builds tends to reduce conflict rather than increase it. We also work with the couple, because the adult relationship is the structure the household rests on, and it's often the part getting the least attention.

Sessions may include the whole household, the couple, or individual members, depending on what's needed. The aim is not to bring a child in to be fixed. Where useful, we can work alongside parent-child conflict work or individual child and teen therapy.

QUESTIONS

Common Questions About Blended Family Therapy

1

What is blended family therapy?

+

Blended family therapy supports stepfamilies working out how to live as one household. It looks at roles that were never openly agreed, the pace things have moved at, and where expectations are colliding — discipline, loyalty, routines, and the couple relationship underneath it all.

2

How long does it take a blended family to adjust?

+

There is no fixed timeline, and families vary widely. What is common is that stepfamilies are expected to build in months what first families build over years, usually while everyone is still carrying the loss that came before. Slower is often steadier.

3

Should a stepparent discipline the children?

+

This is one of the most common flashpoints. Stepparents often move into a disciplinary role sooner than a child can accept it, and easing that back while the relationship builds tends to reduce conflict rather than increase it. Much of the work is clarifying who holds authority for what, and making that explicit rather than assumed.

4

Why does my stepchild keep their distance from me?

+

Warmth toward a stepparent can feel disloyal to the parent who is not in the house. Children often manage that bind by keeping a careful distance, which adults can read as rejection when it is closer to loyalty. Naming that openly often takes pressure off everyone.

5

Do the children have to attend blended family therapy?

+

Not necessarily. Sessions may include the whole household, just the couple, or individual members, depending on what is needed. A good deal of useful work happens with the adults alone, since the household structure is largely set by them.

6

How much does blended family therapy cost in Ottawa?

+

Sessions start at $175, depending on the therapist you see. Sliding-scale spots are available with select therapists, and we direct bill where your insurer allows. Fees are confirmed at your free 15-minute consult.

7

Is family therapy covered by insurance or OHIP?

+

Psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist or Registered Social Worker is not covered by OHIP. Many extended health and workplace plans do cover it, though they differ on which credentials they reimburse. Checking whether your plan covers RP, RSW, or both is worth doing before booking.

8

How is blended family therapy different from regular family therapy?

+

The approach is similar, but the material is specific: two family histories joining, loyalty binds toward a parent outside the home, undefined stepparent roles, and a couple relationship that is often newer than the parenting demands placed on it. Those dynamics do not usually come up in a first family.

9

Can we do blended family therapy online in Ontario?

+

Yes. Sessions are available by secure video anywhere in Ontario and in person at our Centrepointe office in Ottawa. Virtual can be easier when a household is juggling several schedules, and you can move between formats.

10

When should a stepfamily consider therapy?

+

Common points are when the same argument about discipline keeps repeating, when a child has withdrawn, when the couple relationship is being squeezed out by logistics, or around a transition such as moving in together. You do not need things to be in crisis to find it useful.
